Abstract

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on the delivery of quality education emphasizes that stakeholders involved in the delivery of primary, secondary, and higher education should deploy sufficient resources to ensure the provision of equitable and lifelong learning opportunities to learners (UNGC 2020; Heleta and Bagus 2020). This paper argues that the decision to open or close educational institutions around the world is determined by the nature of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in each country. In countries, where the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a serious toll on people’s health and the spread of the virus has reached an uncontrollable level, governments have ensured that educational institutions are closed to protect learners and to combat the spread of the virus.
