Abstract

Examples of aquaculture ventures in the Pacific Islands show that reasonable development has occurred. While some earlier and illplanned projects failed, recent initiatives have shown good results.Future prospects look good for pearl oyster, seaweed, marine and freshwater shrimps, and tilapia. A number of pitfalls must be avoided, however, for aquaculture to reach its potential for economic development in the islands.
