Abstract

Jeremy Dorovolomo will speak on the after-school activities of 63 class four pupils of three Fiji primary schools. The hours between 3 p. m to bedtime, when students are out of school, has always been a concern as to what they are doing and what they should be doing. Globally, many children return home to an empty home. Their parents are still at work or elsewhere when the child gets home. These latchkey children usually spend one or more hours at home alone. Through the latchkey experience various children may develop independence at an early age. On the other hand, it can lead children to negative habits of juvenile delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse. These hours are critical and whether out-of-school time should be adult imposed or invented by children in a safe environment, parents and society need to recognise the importance of after school hours.
