Abstract

Agricultural and rural development has remained the main focal point of aid agencies and the governments in developing countries. The issue of sustainability has added a new dimension to the management of rural economy and agrienterprises. Products of many natural resources used in agricultural production systems do not enter commercial markets and remain unpriced and unaccounted. This study aims to analyze agricultural systems’ linkages with natural resources and then quantify farmers’ dependence on natural resources. The purpose is to show that a wide range of unpriced natural resources have significant economic value to the rural community. The underlying message of this paper is that it is very important for the developing countries to have coordinated planning for sustainable development of rural economy taking into account the interactions between the farming systems and natural resource systems and the trade-offs involved.
