Abstract

Fiji shares many of the energy supply challenges that the other Pacific Island Countries (PICs) encounter due to their small size, remoteness, absence of indigenous fossil fuel reserves and poor institutional mechanisms for development. This paper shows how Fiji has been trying to overcome its energy supply challenges through the use of renewable energy. It begins by summarising the current energy demand and supply situation and noting that the biggest challenge the country faces is its heavy dependence on imported fossil fuel. It then outlines the strategies and action plans the government and the corporate sector have adopted to meet this challenge through the use of the country’s renewable energy resources, and shows how the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) is taking pro-active steps to make the country self-reliant in its power needs. The training and capacity-building issue remains a major challenge. The paper argues that the country’s two leading tertiary institutes should give greater importance to developing coherent and comprehensive training and education programs that would produce the person-power required for the region’s renewable energy development.
