Abstract

English occupies a place of prestige at the University of the South Pacific (USP). It is the main medium of instruction and a generic Academic English course is compulsory for all first-year undergraduate students. Thus, for students, improving their English is essential – they will fail their courses otherwise. For Pacific Island students, English is not a first language, yet, there seems to be a general lack of understanding of their performance in the English classroom. This paper is an attempt to trace some of the linguistic difficulties involved in studying English by speakers of Fiji Hindi. The paper presents a contrastive analysis of Fiji Hindi (L1) and English (L2) at phonological, lexical and syntactic levels to investigate how students’ background and exposure to L2 is affected by L1. The contrastive analysis helps solve some problems in L2 acquisition.
