    Abstract

A study of the history and function of oral tradition in Kiribati. Aspects of the study include the value of oral traditions - myths, legends, genealogical lists, spells, chants, and all oral materials connected with the transmission and preservation of the past for posterity - in extending the history of Kiribati beyond European contact from the point of view of the island chroniclers.
