Abstract

This study examines the effects of private domestic investment, foreign direct investment inflows, central government’s investment and their interactions on technology development. It attempts to find out whether private domestic investment can lead Chinese technology development, with the consideration of spillover effects from FDI and central government’s investment. With panel data on China’s 30 provinces and municipalities over 1997-2014, we use the data envelopment analysis approach to calculate technology indices, and then employ the dynamic panel-data estimation to assess determinants of technology. Our findings suggest that, with good institution and macroeconomic environment, Chinese private domestic investment is building its independence and capacity of leading Chinese technology development.
