Abstract

This paper explores the concepts of culturally responsive pedagogy in Cook Islands secondary schools. A combination of culture, values, teaching and learning creates the basis for culturally responsive pedagogy. A definition of the concept of values in relation to pedagogy and a subsequent focus on the dimensions of culturally responsive is provided. The metaphor of a Cook Islands tivaevae is proposed as a possible model for conceptualizing a culturally responsive pedagogy. The concept of culturally responsive pedagogy is explored in relation to teaching in Cook Islands secondary schooling.
