The A. retraces the journey made by the Polynesian root lei (ivory 'whale tooth' tooth enamel ') as it was borrowed, réempruntée, retested and semantically reinterpreted by the languages of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, and Southern Vanuatu. The path through this root illustrates the complexity of the situation of contact between societies ocean.
