Abstract

Development in non-Anglo-European peripheral societies and minority communities continues to be dominated by an updated but resistant discourse of modernization, and by the expectation that development depends on English. We argue for the demystification of development and English by examining the paradox that an imposed Anglo-European ontology and epistemology as encoded in English results in development failure. We will illustrate our theoretical argument with examples drawn from our ongoing research on language in development in the Solomon Islands over the past three decades.
