Abstract

The synergies between economy and environment are more pronounced today. The global environment/climate change and economic crises are affecting all countries, especially the Small Islands Developing States. Development based on growth in a finite and environmentally stressed world is seen as inherently unsustainable. Achieving sustainable development remains the greatest challenge. De-growth vs green growth debates continue. The paper examines ‘de-growth’ vs. ‘green growth’ approaches with emphasis on ‘green growth’ strategy as a pathway to sustainable development. The paper identifies the ethical dimensions in green growth strategy and also explores the implications of green growth approach in blue world surrounding Pacific island countries.
