Abstract

The study examines i-Kiribati women's and men's health needs and their expectations from the current health services and programs. It also examines knowledge, attitude and practice of contraception, the unmet need for contraception and the quality of the family planning program. In addition it assesses the level of awareness among the study population of reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections. The sample comprised 500 men and 755 women. The sample was taken from the islands of the Gilbert group where 90 per cent of the population dwell. The three islands of South Tarawa, Abaiang and North and South Tabiteua were purposively selected. The villages, however, were randomly selected. A questionnaire was administered to each respondent. The study shows that overall knowledge of contraception among women is high. However their ever and current use of contraception is low. Male knowledge and reported current use is also, as expected, relatively low. In addition their knowledge of where to obtain contraceptive supplies is low. Respondents whose contraceptive need is unmet were identified. Knowledge about STIs and HIV is high among i-Kiribati men. However, precise knowledge about the different infections, their symptoms, the means of transmission and ways of preventing them is overall lacking. The Kiribati Ministry of Health needs to make people aware about these diseases, their symptoms and implications at both micro- and macro-levels. Kiribati has a major challenge in trying to improve the quality of care in the face of resource constraints and staff shortage. The Kiribati Health Department must seek ways and means to satisfy client nee and raise the quality of services while at the same time using resources more efficiently
