Abstract

Crossbred (Yorkshire × Landrace) weaning pigs (16 No.) weighing 13.31±0.20 kg were divided into 4 groups of 4 animals (2 male and 2 female) each in a completely randomised design. The control (T0) diet was based on fish and soybean meals as protein sources without inclusion of copra meal. Cold-pressed copra meal was included at 15, 30 and 45% level in treatments T1, T2 and T3, respectively on as fed-basis. Feed intake, weight gain and final body weight were depressed (P<0.05) on feeding above 15% level of copra meal in the diet i.e. in T2 and T3. There was no significant effect of treatments on feed conversion ratio. Feed cost per kg gain was reduced (P<0.05) above 15% level of dietary copra meal as compared to control. Dressing percentage increased (P<0.05) in the T1 compared to T0 diet but did not differ among groups T0, T2 and T3. Pigs on groups T1 and T2 recorded higher weights (% of live weight) but the values did not differ between T0 and T3 group. The weight of small intestine (% of live weight) was the highest in group T2 and the lowest in group T3. Weight of large intestine was reduced (P<0.05) with increasing copra meal above 15% level of inclusion. It was concluded that 15% cold-pressed copra meal in the diet maintained performance of growing pigs and improved dressing percentage.
