Abstract
This study examines the shortage of pathologists in Fiji, a critical issue affecting timely diagnosis and healthcare quality. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a structured Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method, the research identifies and prioritizes factors influencing the attraction and retention of medical professionals in pathology. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to pathologists, pathology registrars, medical interns, and final-year medical students, ensuring perspectives from both practitioners and trainees. Four main criteria such as career aspirations and influence, support mechanisms, challenges and barriers, and workload and time management were assessed along with their subcriteria. Results revealed career aspirations and influence (47%) as the most influential factor, followed by support systems (28%), challenges and barriers (16%), and workload and time management (10%). These findings highlight that intrinsic motivation, structured mentorship, and access to resources are more critical than financial incentives. The study provides evidence-based guidance for policymakers to strengthen Fiji’s pathology workforce and improve healthcare
outcomes.
