Abstract
For several decades natural disasters have been causing severe damages. During most cyclones and rainy seasons flooding is inevitable. Flooding has devastating consequences for individuals and communities as a whole. The immediate impact of flooding includes loss of human lives, damage of infrastructure and property, damage to crops and loss of livestock. Methods of measuring the increase in the level of water and the approach taken to passing timely information to the people over the past few decades have been very backward as the information provided is inadequate and devoid of useful ICT driven tools. This project demonstrates the design process and the implementation and verification of the device. The main objective of the system is to be able to measure the level of water at every second and alert the affected populace and authorities by means of SMS (short message system) when the water level surpasses a user defined threshold, the user can also monitor the level on demand by calling the device and the device will reply with an SMS containing the relevant data. Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) network has been used for sending messages. An Arduino Uno microcontroller is used to read the input from the sensor. The theory being used for measuring is based on the theory of pressure applied to fluids; using this method for measurements the system proves to be 99.9% accurate. The device is far more accurate than most systems used currently as it is localized. The warning system is observed to be faster and more effective for alerting affected residents and relevant authorities. Therefore, data is deemed to be very much useful for monitoring weather patterns and tides.
