Abstract
Oil filters have been replaced in the automotive industry for generations. In Pacific island countries, technicians and mechanics face a major problem removing and installing these filters as the tools available in the industry are either not appropriate for the task, or too expensive to procure. The tools widely used also lack in important
functionalities such as; lack of torque accuracy, safety, ineffective in tight places and lack in versatility. These problems can be addressed by developing the tool “Automotive Oil Filter Wrench”. Six different existing wrenches used in the industry were studied and reviewed. These include, end cap oil filter wrench, spider wrench,
metal bend wrench, filter pliers, strap wrench and a chain wrench, with reference to their structure, types, manufacturing processes, accuracy, versatility, safety,
durability, advantages and drawbacks helps to design a novel structure for oil filter wrench. The best tool selected was the chain wrench where further research was
carried out to develop the innovation. The invented oil filter wrench comprises of two components. Firstly, a re-designed chain wrench (Figure 4) which is made from a
typical bicycle chain that is welded on to a square hole socket. Assembled with the second component, that is, the wrench linkage (Figure 5) that connects to the chain
wrench through a socket. The torque wrench can then be used to tighten/ open the filter through the socket connection at the other end of the link (wrench fitting). The
link is made up of a wrench pipe (Figure 1) and a wrench fitting (Figure 2). The wrench fitting slides over the wrench pipe (Figure 3), which is positioned through a
ball lock pin. The ball lock pin is adjusted by the user as the socket of the wrench pipe gets in-line with the oil filter’s center. This innovative tool solves the problem
people face in servicing automobiles, in addition it proves to be the most robust, versatile and reliable tool in its kind.
