Abstract

Trade imbalance can be considerable source of macroeconomic instability in an economy. In the recent years, a number of studies have examined the relationship between exports and imports, in order to investigate sustainability of trade deficits. Presence of an long run relationship between the two variables has been seen as success of policymakers to bring exports and imports in equilibrium in the long run. It also indicates whether trade deficit is an economy is sustainable or not. In this paper, we provide further evidence on sustainability of trade imbalance using co-integration analysis using time series data from Singapore.
