Abstract
This paper examines the motivational dimensions of the “publish or perish” dictum that governs the working life and careers of contemporary academics. It focuses on Private Training Establishments (PTEs) in New Zealand, and contends that, given the nature of the industry and its pecuniary potential, a total reliance on internal mechanisms to motivate and encourage research might not be enough for various reasons.
