Abstract
The animation of facial expressions is an active field of research. The human face itself is a special object due to its complexity and communication abilities. Different techniques have been developed to control the face deformation to achieve realistic facial expressions of human emotions. A widely accepted theoretical foundation for the control of facial animation is the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). FACS describes a set of 'Action Units' (AU's) that correspond to basic actions (some mapped to individual muscles, but others involve multiple muscles, or even joint motion). This paper intends to describe the mathematical models developed, particularly the muscle model, to simulate human expression and their suitability to adopt the FACS paradigm for facial expression animation.
