This chapter reflects on fieldwork conducted in Qatar with a focus on the intercultural challenges experienced before and during the fieldwork. Intercultural challenges are potential difficulties that emerge in interactions between people from different cultures and backgrounds. The challenges discussed in this chapter relate to field access, local accommodation, interview gatekeepers and awkward moments during interviews. The chapter contributes to the literature on qualitative research by producing knowledge on intercultural challenges experienced before and during the fieldwork. It contributes to the literature on fieldwork and area studies by providing insight on the process of field research conducted in the Arab Gulf and Qatar specifically. The chapter concludes by offering 9 tips for colleagues who are planning to conduct (field) work in the Arab Gulf or Qatar.
