Abstract
Most people would agree that international trade is beneficial to the world economy. There are groups of individuals who argue that international trade has adverse implications on the world economy. Over the last century, numerous theories have developed to examine why countries engage in international trade and the implications of international trade on the world economy. The traditional trade theories assume that markets are perfectly competitive, with constant returns to scale and homogenous goods. The new international trade theory has challenged these assumptions. This paper aims to discuss the new theory of international trade and its implications for designing and implementing trade policy in Fiji and Samoa.
