What is an island and how do island states differ from continental states? If answers are to be had, one should expect to find them in the Routledge international handbook of island studies. In this book, editor Godfrey Baldacchino brings together 40 academics from diverse backgrounds who are united by one common thread: the study of islands. The handbook is organized in two parts and contains 21 chapters, each highlighting important aspects of islands. The first part discusses the foundations of islands and island life, whereas the second part analyses the human world of islands. Defining an island is a daunting task, as the concept is surrounded by ambiguity. The preface to the handbook engages with the definitional imbroglios of islands.
