Abstract
Between 1987 and 2006, there were four coups in Fiji in which governments were overthrown by their armed forces or parts of them. After the fourth coup in December 2006, old friends from metropolitan areas such as Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and the EU responded by imposing travel sanctions, halting military cooperation and freezing development aid. When Fiji was politically iso-lized, it nurtured the secondary political friendships of old and built new ones.
Since Fiji returned to parliamentary democracy in 2014, three elections have taken place. The first, in September 2014, ended in a landslide victory for the forces involved in the 2006 coup; the second, in November 2018, came very close to a change of government. The ruling FijiFirst party very narrowly maintained an absolute majority. However, in the election on December 14, 2022, it was no longer enough: Over the years, FijiFirst had seen its share of the vote steadily dwindle, until on December 24, 2022, it had to hand over the reins of government to a coalition government of the People's Alliance Party (PAP), the National Federation Party (NFP) and the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), which tipped the scales.
