The issue of poverty had taken center stage particularly after the wake of the United Nations MDGs (now called SDGs) with the aim to end global poverty by 2030. This is specifically significant for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) facing several unique socio-economic issues. Thus, it is vital to comprehend how the flow of ODA to LDCs contributes to poverty reduction. Prior studies largely centered on panel of developing countries or country-specific episodes on LDCs to analyse ODA-poverty nexus, however this study departed from this practice to account for panel of LDCs.
Specifically, the aim of this thesis is to analyse long run nexus between ODA and poverty using Augmented Mean Group estimator (Eberhardt and Bond, 2009; Eberhardt and Teal, 2010) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (Phillips and Hansen,1990) estimator is employed for robustness checks. The data for this thesis stretched from 1991 to 2018. The findings of this thesis revealed positive and statistically significant impact of ODA on poverty meaning ODA perpetuates poverty in LDCs in the long run. While GDP per capita and trade openness significantly contributed to reducing poverty levels underscoring the critical role of GDP growth rates in uplifting living standards including the prominence of export-oriented policies ODA reforms which can be linked with trade-friendly policies in LDCs to witness promising impacts on poverty. Hence there is a call for more coordinated ODA flows to LDCs. Going forward, development partners should provide more targeted assistance to LDCs and pursue regular assessments of ODA programs to ensure that funds are utilised more effectively and used for intended purposes.
