Abstract
The project was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs through the Taukei Lands and Fisheries Commission. We acknowledge with gratitude the active support of Ratu Vananalagi Vesikula, chairman of the Taukei Lands and Fisheries Commission and his Commissioners for providing critical feedback on our preliminary findings. Their active support and engagement are critical to a successful outcome of this project.
The report has been compiled with the hope that it will stimulate discussion in the Vanua of Natewa and encourage researchers contemplating similar research into Vanua succession history and governance in Fiji and the Pacific Islands region.
We acknowledge the generous support of our employer, the University of the South Pacific and funds through the Research Office’s Strategic Research Theme (SRT) Project (7701-R1001-75751-001). They are to be commended for recognizing the strategic importance of the identification and resolution of Vanua leadership issues due to its social and economic impact on national and regional development.
This report is dedicated to the children of Natewa with the hope that after years of endemic conflict, misunderstanding and misrepresentation, they may learn something useful about their Vanua from this Report and pursue further research into their Vanua and enhance developments in Natewa and elsewhere in Viti.
