Abstract
Set in the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in geography, this chapter centers on people living in informal settlements in Fiji's capital, Suva. The major intention, however, is to assess how geography can contribute to studying urban societies in ways that respect and even nurture diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, thereby empowering communities. We focus on research activities concerning economic and, particularly, environmental improvements in informal settlements. The Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) activity is the biggest of these initiatives. Valuable insights include not only how to improve water and sanitation in informal settlements but also how to achieve resident participation in activities, with ownership being an essential precondition for their success.
