This chapter engages with different and changing ideas about island states’ territorial sovereignty and the political significance of those ideas to island states’ agency in a context of global climate change. Drawing on insight from “wet ontologies,” it identifies how the threat of climate change has influenced the construction of Pacific identities as Large Oceanic States and facilitated powerful claims for international recognition of continuous territorial sovereignty that compel us to rethink possibilities for statehood and sovereignty at sea and beyond.
