Abstract

We use a community-based approach and the sustainable livelihoods and community capitals frameworks to examine indigenous Fijian (iTaukei) local knowledge systems and to suggest diversification of income sources in the Waimanu Catchment, Fiji. We found that sustainable management and use of natural ecosystems and resources, collaboration among internal and external stakeholders, enrichment of human capital through education and training programs, and provision of infrastructure and sanitation services were key principles for enhancing communities’ income security. However, the methodological approach used in this study would be challenging to apply globally, as it may not be relevant across different socio-ecological contexts.
