The Pacific region is exposed to many forms of disasters. Incidences including the COVID-19, natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, cyclones, hurricanes, flooding, tsunamis, landslides, and earthquakes have created chaos in the region. In most cases, assistance and support after such disasters take a while to reach many countries. The isolation from the rest of the world, and the remoteness of many areas from urban centres mean that people must cope with whatever is left after such crises. The education sector, like other sectors affected by these unforeseen circumstances find the learners, teachers, institutions, and ministries of education struggling to continue learning and teaching without the resources and infrastructure that has been damaged. In 2020, the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in partnership with MFAT initiated a 5-year project (2020-2025) to promote ODFL learning, methods, and technologies and to better equip the Pacific Island countries in times of such natural disasters. Together with COL’s regional centre, PACFOLD, the project trained teachers of the South Pacific Commonwealth countries on the identification and use of OERs in teaching Science subjects, use of AI in teaching material generation and on the creation of a Community of Practice among the teachers.
Concurrently, learners of today expect learning to be innovative with the use of digital tools that enrich their learning experiences. The teaching and learning landscape have therefore been greatly transformed in recent years and teachers in secondary schools in Fiji require training and support to become efficient technology users in their classrooms. This paper presents a dual perspective examining both the regional STEM teacher training initiative and Fiji’s digital empowerment program, exploring their synergies and collective impact on Pacific education systems.
