Abstract

The paper reports on an initiative taken by the University of the South Pacific to develop continuing education programmes for primary teachers in the Pacific region. Instead of a dead end after their initial training in the teachers' colleges, opportunities are now made available for them to continue with their education. The paper also provides insights into the situation of primary teacher education and training in the Pacific region, and the rationale for the introduction and externalization of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree programme. The paper concludes with the University's role and challenges in terms of providing an equitable and accessible degree programme for Pacific primary teachers.
