Abstract

This paper examines how streamflow and surface water availability on Fiji’s largest island of Viti Levu is vulnerable to climatic extremes associated with the ENSO phenomenon in the South West Pacific. Case studies of tropical cyclone- induced floods and later droughts that were caused by the 1997-98 El Nino event are described to illustrate the type and magnitude of the impacts. Possible increasing climate variability and climate change in the pacific region is considered and projected effects on stream water resources are modelled. Results suggest that both maximum flood size and water scarcity during droughts may increase by 20% by the year 2100. A range of adaptation options to reduce the adverse effects of future floods and droughts are presented.
