THE GLODAL Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) is a NGO with a broad mission of “promoting socially relevant legal education”. 1 Recently GAJE Australia held the organisation’s first regional conference.2 At this conference an HIV education project that aims to increase awareness of HIV and human rights issues was developed. It is different from many legal literacy programmes (particularly programmes based upon the distribution of information through brochures and other media) in that its starting point is the belief that law change and subsequent information/education about the law, particularly in relation to human right issues, does not, in itself, create societal change. Instead programmes have to be tailored in such a way as to encourage attitudinal change that is necessary in order to meaningfully recognise human rights.
