Abstract

The 3rd Pacific Conference of Churches Assembly, held in Port Moresby in 1976, passed two notable motions: the acceptance of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference as a full member of PCC, and the first major condemnation of nuclear testing in the Pacific. It also appointed Bishop Jabez Bryce as Chairman of PCC, a role he filled until 1986. This paper looks at Bishop Bryce’s engagement with the nuclear free Pacific issue from 1976 to his appearance in Paris in 1999 at an enquiry into France’s nuclear legacy in the Pacific.
