Abstract

The phrase "Hindi Media" refers to news, information and entertainment presented via print and broadcast media in the Hindi language. Hindi was originally brought from India in 1879 when the first batch of indentured labourers settled in Fiji. Fijians of Indian descent now comprise 37% of Fiji’s population.

In Fiji, the Hindi language is in a state of diglossia. The existence of Standard Hindi as a formal literary form is considered more prestigious while Fiji Hindi, a colloquial form used by most speakers is considered of lower status. The fact remains that Fiji Hindi is the mother-tongue of Fijians of Indian descent. Standard Hindi has the status of an official language. However, it is used much less than its status as official language may suggest. Even in government offices, for example, Fiji Hindi dominate in verbal interaction about day to day work. The domain where Standard Hindi is the most important is the school system. Thus only a relatively small number of people make predominant use of Standard Hindi on a daily basis.

While Fiji Hindi is by far the most commonly used language in everyday interaction the language of the media is almost exclusively Standard Hindi. There are historical and global reasons for this, but the question arises as to whether it is possible to promote Fiji Hindi that more accurately reflect actual language use, and hence better serve the people of Fiji. Fijians of Indian descent have very little opportunity to listen to or watch programmes in their own language.

This paper will look at the use of Hindi in its two forms in the Fiji media. Fiji's Media Industry Development Authority is mapping out ways to raise the standard of media services in Hindi with a keen focus on Fiji Hindi. It is important that as part of the "vision of a new Fiji", with a common identity and purpose, that there were quality media services in all languages which would help people in defining themselves.
