Abstract

Factors identified as responsible for poor economic performance of Fiji include the slow pace of economic reforms, political uncertainty and the issue of land ownership. Eighty-three percent of the land in Fiji is owned by Melanesian Fijian owners of land and inequality in the distribution of rents to Melanesian Fijians. Other problems include the existence of insecurity of tenure by ethnic Indian farmers, lack of collateral for credit by users of the native land, lack of conservation of and management of the land and, in certain circumstances, high land rents for the the tenants further undermining productivity. Such domestic institutional impediments to effective economic development of Fiji, in the midst of increasing globalisation of the economy, needs to be reviewed.
