Abstract

A 10cm (diameter) x 7.5 cm Nal(TI) gamma-ray spectrometer with a low background shield has been used to measure the natural radioactivity levels in soils of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji. From this, the external gamma-dose which is likely to be delivered to the local population in this region is computed and found to be 99 uGy a-1. This is well below the world average, but it is comparable to that obseved in Marshall Islands and the Micronesia.
