Abstract

Abstract

This chapter documents grand parenting from a small cross section of the Indo-Fijian diaspora. The Indo-Fijian diaspora refers to the community descended from indentured labourers brought from India to Fiji from 1879–1920, as well as descendants of smaller groups of later free Indian immigrants who arrived after 1900. This study based on the words of the respondents on their cultural and social role as grandparents, particularly that as caregivers for their grandchildren, is prefaced by a short literary-historical narrative on the Indo-Fijian diaspora.
