Poly(butylene succinate) [PBS] a synthetic biodegradable and biocompatible polyester which possess mechanical properties similar to polyethylene and exhibits excellent processing properties [1] was blended in different ratios with a natural gum extracted from the pine tree (Pinus Caribaea – Hondurensis). This natural material was in the form of a gum and has been used traditionally to heal wounds because of the antibacterial properties it possesses [2]. The aim of this research is to develop materials that show combined individual advantages of PBS and the pine gum for potential applications in the biomedical fields. The properties of the blends is dependent on the extent the two components interact at the molecular level. In this paper we report the miscibility behaviour in the blends investigated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry [DSC], Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [FTIR] and Polarised Optical Microscopy [POM] while the mechanical properties was determined by tensile testing. These blends were found to be miscible through the depression of the equilibrium melting temperature (Fig. 1), changes in the infrared spectrum and observation of extinction rings (Fig. 2) in the spherulites.
