Abstract

Existing studies on human development and women’s labour force participation rate shows mixed results. Some studies have found that human development influences women’s labour force participation rate while other studies have found that there is no relationship between human development and women’s labour force participation rate. This paper uses data from the United Nations Development Programme, World Bank and Asian Development Bank database to empirically determine whether human development influences women’s labour force participation rate in Fiji. The findings of this study confirm that human development influences women’s labour force participation rate both in the short run and long run. Currently, the most immediate need in Fiji is to review existing education policies that are targeted towards different gender and minority groups so that these policies can effectively contribute towards developing an egalitarian society.
