Abstract
South Asian novelists living in countries of the global north, who sometimes make the choice of returning to the global south, are increasingly concerned with the cultural, political, and aesthetic possibilities raised by migratory lives, practices, and subjects. This chapter examines the key novelists of the South Asian diaspora who have followed in the footsteps of the pioneering Indo-Trinidadian author, V. S. Naipaul. It accounts for the aesthetics of dwelling outside an imagined homeland, whether permanently or as sojourners, and the relations various characters keep to the idea of exile, travel, adaptation, and transculturation.
