Abstract

Plant-parasitic nematodes are an economically important pest of major oil seed crops. A total of 128 species from 36 nematode genera are reported from oil seed crops including soybean (Glycine max), rapeseed (Brassica napus subsp. Napus), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), corn (Zea mays), cotton seed (Gossypium hirsutum), oil palm (Elaeis oleifera and Elaeis guineensis), coconut (Cocos nucifera), and olive (Olea europaea). Some of the most damaging nematode species of oilseed crops include Heterodera glycines (soybean), Meloidogyne arenaria (peanut), Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica (cotton, olive, soybean, sunflower), Pratylenchus brachyurus, P. thornei, P. zeae (corn, cotton, peanut, sunflower), and Rotylenchulus reniformis (cotton, sunflower, soybean). Among the nematode genera affecting five or more oil seed crops include Pratylenchus, Helicotylenchus, Meloidogyne, Hoplolaimus, Rotylenchulus, Tylenchorhynchus, Xiphinema, and Belonolaimus. Sixteen nematode genera were limited to a particular oilseed crop. The damage caused by these plant nematodes to oil seed crops and their sustainable management practices are discussed in this chapter.
