This chapter translates pattern theory into the basis for scientific inquiry. The ways in which patterns and pattern thinking can contribute to the development and articulation of theory are explored, as are the ways in which pattern expressions and pattern representations can externalise and share theory. A pattern methodology is a pattern theoretical position with respect to phenomena of interest that might involve examining, generating, or elaborating patterns, or using pattern as a lens. Five modalities of pattern inquiry are described (purpose, focus, disposition, process, and product) in terms of a series of pattern characteristics: cognition, constitution, logics, uniqueness, awareness, dynamism, continuum, categorisation, formation, dependency, modalities, triggering, elaboration, weaving, micro-meso-macro, layering, similarity and difference, generation, limitations, sharing, latency, expressing and representing, and medium of expression. The chapter closes with a consideration of different methodological precedents for pattern inquiry.
