The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), Nairobi, was founded in 1978, joined the Consultative Group for International Research ( CGIAR) in 1991, and recently changed its name to World Agroforestry Centre. This Paper reviews 25years of research by the Centre. We argue that the first agroforestry researchers made over – optimistic assumptions and took some wrong paths. This is no meant as a criticism of decisions made at the time but to show how experience has led to a stronger research programme now. The lessons learnt could benefit other sectors of development research.
