Abstract

More than 45 percent of the population in Fiji lives in rural areas and a significantly large proportion lives on meager income due to declining economy and low wage rates. There have been many lack-luster efforts in the past to revive the rural economy of Fiji but not much has been achieved. A renewed effort by the government now aims to increase the agricultural economy. There are however many constraints that are likely to hinder sustainable development of this sector. It would require diligent policy applications to increased production and develop a sustainable agribusiness component to add value. The agribusiness component would help enhance the rural income and also expand domestic consumption to absorb output from the manufacturing sector providing both forward and backward linkages. However, these efforts may be seriously undercut by various fundamental problems such as land access, lack of property rights and the prospect of market failures, lack of infrastructure and utility support. This paper analyses these issues in the context of globalization and domestic sector development. It delves on policy prescriptions to create the right business environment to encourage agribusiness and boost farm production through commercial farming. It argues that strengthening agribusiness linkages with small-scale farmers would provide both the basis and means of rural economic growth and poverty reduction in Fiji.
