Data on Women's reproductive Health are seriously lacking in countries of the South Pacific. Data employed in this survey were collected in November-December 1998. The respondents comprised men 20-54 years and women 15-49 years who were selected through multi-stage sampling procedure. The study was conducted to help establish an empirical data base that will include basic population parameters and to collect information on women and men's health needs from the current services and programs. It hoped that this will guide awareness creating activities at the national and community levels and highlighting gaps in our knowledge as a basis for further research and IEC interventions.
Data show that the family planning program needs to target men in Samoa. Programs need to address the issue of trust and communication between spouses. With HIV /AIDS awareness the Ministry of Health, Women's Affairs and Education have the mammoth task of educating the public in this area.
The study has thrown light on contraceptive knowledge, awareness, unmet need of family planning, STI awareness and the quality of health care in Samoa. There is much to be done to benefit to be done by the government in order to benefit the people of Samoa.
