Abstract
This presentation, for a staff seminar, reported data on students' self assessment of various skills. The data suggested that the perceptions of students and lecturers in respect of competence in things such as writing and referencing were quite disparate. The presentation then argued for the importance of explicitly teaching metacognitive awareness.
