Abstract
In an undergraduate class of 108 tertiary students in 2015, the lecturer asked, “does anybody know about Girmit?”Only four hands went up. Then he followed up by asking the four, “what was Girmit?” Only one linked it to the arrival of Indian indentured labourers in Fiji.
This paper presents the empirical results of a pilot study on the pivotal question of the relevance of Girmit in today’s Fiji. It should lead to a more comprehensive and definitive study that would provide pointers for further studies on the same both within and outside of Fiji. The findings would be of interest to stakeholders involved in the ongoing work on Indian indentured labourers throughout the world.
