Abstract

University life presents many unique stressors that put young people at risk of mental health disorders as well as potentially leading to burnout, non-completion, and low academic achievement. There is also a recognition that students from Indigenous and ethnic minority communities tend to be underrepresented in higher education, with worse mental health and lower completion rates than their white European peers. This is driven by various educational, socio-economic, and cultural factors that need to be better understood to provide appropriate support systems. This chapter aims to describe and critically discuss this issue within the context of students from the (often overlooked) Pacific Oceania Region. The chapter begins with an introduction to the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) and the significant social and mental health challenges these populations experience. It also describes the unique conceptualization of wellbeing for Indigenous Pacific Islanders, particularly the deeply embedded role of the family and community. The chapter then aims to extend theoretical discussions by providing a brief report of the first systematic study on tertiary student mental health across PICs. Finally, these discussions are drawn together into a series of recommendations with the aim of facilitating and supporting Pacific student cohorts through tertiary studies.
